Two years of learning, collaborating, travelling and debating … two years of asking questions, visiting tech ecosystems and hearing from leaders and experts… did we get any closer to understanding what a TechTown is? More importantly, can we now say that we (the partners in the network) ARE TechTowns?

On a rainy day in March in a funky meeting space in Brussels, the network came together for the final event to share our individual journeys and our collective journey with a range of guests. We took the approach from day one with TechTown that we wanted to ‘walk the walk’ of the digital sector – it’s not enough to look at the world of tech startups, tech disruption, tech ecosystems etc though a telescope from afar. We had to connect with entreprenuers, learn their language, and spend time in their world.

With this in mind, a key focus of our final event was sharing our TechTown Action Plans in a punchy, tech startup kind of way. All of our cities worked with a coach to prepare startup style pitches – 3 mins and a few slides to articulate the local problem and the proposed solution that had been developed through TechTown.

It was intense, frantic and fun but each city stepped up and sold to the room exactly how they would be a TechTown. The slides share our learning as well as the pitches from our cities.

You can see rough and ready videos of all the pitches and our key learnings below as well as download a PDF of our final event booklet. We will continue to share progress of all of our partners via the toolkit but if you’re keen to collaborate with other tech towns and tech cities do join an URBACT supported community for tech sector enablers and a great compendium of stories and case studies of what’s working across Europe to support growth in the digital sector, and how to support disruption across industry.

In the words of our strapline – you have to ADAPT or DIE!
