Set within the National Peak District, Barnsley is close to a number of local attractions such as Elsecar Heritage Centre, Wentworth Castle and Cannon Hall Museum Park. If shopping is more your thing, Barnsley is home to a number of high street stores and a vibrant market, which is to be further enhanced by the current redevelopment project. Meadowhall shopping centre with over 270 stores is 20 minutes drive away and Leeds is just a short drive up the M1.

Barnsley is home to the Lamproom Theatre which hosts many plays and musicals through the year and the Academy Theatre which is used for both amateur and professional productions. The town and surrounding area is also home to a number of sporting and leisure facilities including Oakwell Stadium, home of Barnsley Football Club.
